How To Use A Crab Trap

Have you ever eaten crab meat before? If not I would highly recommend eating its dish with pasta. But if you have, you’ll agree with me that its meat has an exquisite taste and I think that’s why its dishes are very expensive.

To save you the cost of buying them, crabs can be easily fished, unlike other fishes. Sometimes on beaches, they can be easily handpicked and collected on the shores. But most of the time, crabs are fished using a crab trap.

A crab trap is a fishing tool that is used to fish crabs by baiting them. A crab trap can be used for either recreational fishing or commercial fishing and it’s effective since it can capture a large number of crabs at a single go.

How Is It Used?

There are many types of crab traps. Regardless of that, all have the same process during usages. These steps are:

Attach the bait

The first step towards using a crab trap in fishing crabs is attaching the bait that will lure the crabs towards the trap. The bait is food in which the crabs eat and filling a lot of it around the trap will eventually attract a lot of crabs.

Things to adhere to when attaching the bait

  • Always attach the bait tightly such that its water current proof and the fish or crab can’t detach it.

Attach the trap to a buoy or a firm rope

The buoy or a rope is used as a transporting cable for the trap when placing on the water and when pulling it out. The rope has to be firm and sometimes a steel chain is considered to be more favorable.

Things to adhere when attaching the buoy

  • Once the trap is immersed on the water it becomes hard to pull out and so it’s important to make sure the rope used is tightly attached to avoid detaching during the pulling of the trap out of the water.

Prepare the trap doors

In case you are using a crab trap that has doors make sure you check the doors. The doors are supposed to swing freely in which will help during the trap closing once the crabs enter the crab trap.

Things to adhere to when using preparing the doors

  • New crab traps often come with rubber bands attached to the doors of the crab trap. Thus make sure you check for these or else you’ll end up catching nothing.

Drop the crap trap

Thus after preparing the crab trap, drop it gently and slowly on the water. Note that crabs are usually located at the bottom of the sea, and so you’ll need to drop the crab trap until it reaches the bottom of the sea

Things to adhere when dropping the crab trap

  • Avoid dropping the crab trap rapidly. This can cause the crab trap to flip on the side where the door is located, blocking the access of crabs towards the cage.

After following this process then wait and let your crab trap do the work for you. During this moment you will be checking the crab trap from time to time by pulling it and in case you feel more resistant than usual when pulling, you pull the cage out of the water to fish out the crabs.

Types Of Crab Trap

There are several types of crab traps depending on their designs. These include:-

Ring crab traps

These are crab traps that consist of two rings, one on the top of the round cage while the other at the bottom. It is designed in such a way that the base ring is smaller than the top ring. In this crab trap, the bait is usually tied at the bottom of the crab cage. They are commonly used to fish crabs located river mouths, shoreline and sometimes bay areas.

The Maryland crab pot

The Maryland crab pot is a crab trap that is made with 4 openings and wires covering most of the parts of the crab pot. Its shape is like a cubic shape in which allows it to have 4 openings. The openings are constructed in such a way that when the crabs enter the cage they cannot leave the cage thus leaving them trapped. Due to its size, it’s able to accommodate a large number of crabs compared to other crab traps.

Pyramid crab trap

They are similar to cubic crab traps such as the pyramid except for the fact that they are 3 sided crab traps. Their doors are designed in such a way that they drop once the crab trap is immersed on water, to allow the crabs to enter into it  After crabs into to eat the bait, the doors are then shut by pulling the rope attached to them, therefore trapping the crabs

Crab Hawk crab trap

The Crab Hawk crab trap is a trap which is mostly confused with a crab snare. It consists of a rode in which holds to foldable nets with a thin thread. The crap trap works differently from other crab traps since it requires to be attached on a fishing line and be pushed by a rod so as for its work. Once it’s immersed on the water it lies flat, with the bait hanging on it. Thus once the crabs lie on top of it when eating the bait, the trap is then pulled out of the water, leaving the crabs trapped on the net. This is used to specifically catch a small number of crabs, unlike other crab traps.

Things to Consider When Fishing for Crabs

The time of the day

Crabs along with other fishes are mostly fished during the night

The number of crabs you aim at catching

Each trap has its limits when it comes to crab fishing. For example, the Maryland crab trap can fish about 15 pounds of crabs unlike the Crab Hawk crap trap

The state of the water

Crabs are usually located on places with water currents and that’s why they are sometimes found on the shores of the beaches
