Ready Time

2 hrs

Yields

4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

Combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large mixing bowl, and let it sit for 5-7 minutes, or until the yeast is activated and foamy.

Add the flour, salt, and softened butter to the bowl, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces.

Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it slightly into a disk shape.

Place the buns on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each bun.

Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg and sprinkle with a pinch of sugar.

Drizzle the milk over the buns, making sure each one gets a little bit of milk.

Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown.

Notes

For best results, use warm water that’s not too hot, as yeast can’t tolerate high temperatures. Make sure your yeast is fresh and not expired, as this will affect the rising process.

Use high-quality all-purpose flour that has a good protein content, as this will help with the structure and texture of the buns.

Don’t overmix the dough when combining the ingredients, as this can lead to tough buns. Stop mixing once the ingredients come together in a shaggy dough.

When kneading the dough, make sure to flour your surface well to prevent sticking.

You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment if you prefer. Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place, such as the oven with the light on or a pantry.

Don’t let it rise too long, as this can cause the buns to collapse.

When shaping the dough into balls and then disks, make sure they’re evenly sized so they bake evenly. Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet, as the buns need room to expand during baking.

If you need to, bake them in batches.

Keep an eye on the buns during the last 5 minutes of baking, as they can go from perfectly golden to burnt quickly. These buns are best consumed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
